Located in a food desert and surrounded by fast food restaurants, Evelyn’s Food Love at 5522 S. State St. is making a name for itself for the food, customer service and inviting decor.
Open less than six months, Evelyn’s Food Love is generating a loyal following for her comfort food offerings, fresh produce and desserts from scratch. The restaurant’s location near an urban farm allows Evelyn Shelton to go from farm-to-table.
“We’ve been able to reduce our carbon footprint where produce is concerned, “ explains Shelton. “We get fresh kale and make our own kale soup and salad everyday. They bring us collard greens and cucumbers and we make a pickled relish to go with the greens.”
Shelton became a chef after retiring as a hospital administrator. She always dreamed of opening a restaurant and went back to college to get a degree in culinary arts. She also has a certificate in baking and pastry. Her love for cooking is how Evelyn’s Food Love got its name.
“Its name is appropriate, because it describes my affair with food that has been going on for years,” says chef Evelyn.
Coincidentally, Shelton became an executive chef at the same hospital from which she retired.
So far, Evelyn’s Food Love is receiving top reviews. She says people are enjoying the food, the space and the customer service.
