It’s National Sandwich Day and we decided to honor it by starting a food fight. By definition, a sandwich is a food item consisting of two pieces of bread with meat, cheese, or other filling between them, eaten as a light meal.
That “light meal” part is probably outdated, especially when it comes to Black owned spots that are known for filing you up. Now for the sake of clarity, we are going to be talking about the best spots for a typical sandwich, hoagy or sub sandwich from Waukegan to Kankakee. These are the ones we say are the best in the business.
If you are from Chicago, you know about this classic. They have two locations on the Southside and one in the south suburbs and have been around since the 80s. This is not a light meal. For $16 you get a healthy sandwich that may take you two settings to finish. The combo comes with a pop and a pickle. They have hoagies too, but that corn beef is what they are known for and it’s a must try.
Since 1966, the Home of the Hoagy has been the place to go for a delicious hoagy. Chicago celebrities often stop by to get their fix. They are an OG of the hoagy, a HOA-Gee if you will. They are really the birth of the Chicago style sweet steak sandwich. Get that one.
The other OG to the hoagy game is Taurus Flavors. The original owner and the owner of Home of the Hoagy started off together with the vision of doing something that rivaled the Philly cheesesteak. They did. Job well done. Get that sweet steak from them too. The Dolton location is currently open. We are not sure when the flagship one will be rebuilt and reopen on 84th and Stony.
RVs may seem new to the game for the uninitiated, but this is the product of the family of the Home of the Hoagy. Ms. RV’s hands were the hands making those hoagies on 111th for a long time. they’ve expanded the menu but the steak sandwich is still a big attraction. They have an expanded menu there. Try something and give them a review on our website.
Unbeatable Eatable is really an HOA-Gee too. Since 1979, they have been making sandwiches on the Southside. They have have an amazing turkey submarine that will leave you smiling. Get it loaded with everything. Trust me. Trust them. Delicious. They have plenty of options as well. And they have a line of seasonings that can be found in your local grocery store. If you don’t see them, ask the store manager to carry them.
For those in the Beverly / Morgan Park area, this is a gem. Along with some great subs they have salads, soups and some breakfast items. They have an amazing turkey sub and a loaded vegetarian sub that on point.
Since opening a few years ago in the Chatham / Greater Grand Crossing neighborhoods, Mabe’s has been an excellent spot for the panini style sandwich. They have new ownership and have pushed the menu every further now with a variety of sandwiches, including a new line of breakfast sandwiches. We recommend DJ’s Jerk Turkey Panini. Everything is made fresh.
